Alleen Gezien Worden
My first short film, Alleen Gezien Worden (To Be Seen), was shot on an iPhone 13 to demonstrate that you can create meaningful cinema with just a smartphone.
The film follows a woman who navigates her lonely existence, feeling invisible in her daily life. Everything changes when she meets a stranger at the train station, someone who truly sees her for the first time. This encounter opens her eyes to the possibility of connection and understanding, making her question her perception of loneliness. Through this story, I aim to highlight the power of human connection and the impact of simply being seen.
In this film, I also focus on the sound accompanying the visuals, as there are no spoken words. I want the story to unfold through the music, allowing the audience to feel the emotions and atmosphere without dialogue. This approach emphasizes the power of human connection and the impact of simply being seen, inviting viewers to engage deeply with the experience.
Bevroren In Beweging
My second short film, Bevroren In Beweging (Frozen in Motion), was also shot on an iPhone 13. I created this film for my grandparents, who have cherished memories of our family’s caravan in Ameland. Unfortunately, they are now too old to visit their beloved island, so I wanted to capture the essence of Ameland in a way that keeps it close to them.
Through this film, I aim to evoke nostalgia and a sense of connection to their favorite place. I also incorporated distinctive music to reinforce the emotional message, ensuring that the feeling of being in Ameland resonates with them, even if they can no longer physically return.
De Vierde Verdieping
My third short film, De Vierde Verdieping (The Fourth Floor), was shot partly on a digital camera and an iPhone 13, marking my first experience working with equipment beyond just the iPhone. This adjustment brought new challenges and creative opportunities.
The film is a short horror story about a girl who goes to the fourth floor to pick up a package she ordered online, only to find herself directed to a secluded building. As she searches for her package, she quickly discovers that it never existed, and an eerie figure begins to haunt the fourth floor. Will she ever get her package back?
I chose to create a horror film because I find the genre fascinating and believe it offers a lot of creative potential. This project allowed me to explore a completely different style from my usual work, pushing me to experiment with suspense and atmosphere in ways I hadn’t before.
